Our Churches.

THE EL PASO CHRISTIAN CHURCH was organized July 3, 1864, by Uncle Jimmie Robeson and Elder John Lindsey at a meeting held in the East side school house now remodeled into the residence occupied by Dr. J. A. Schofield. Of the forty charter members there is a record of twenty deaths, thirteen are still living and the present state and residence of eight are unknown. 'Squire J. H. Moore is the only one of the charter members still holding his membership here, he having held the official position of elder and trustee f rom the date of organization to the present time. After organization social meetings were held from house to house for some time, Strathman's hall being occupied when preaching could be obtained.

During 1865 the congregation built a little house--just one half of the building recently vacated-- which was enlarged to its present size in 1877. No regular pastor was located for many years, but the pulpit was filled much of the time by ministers employed for just the Sunday services. Among the many able men who have preached here during the congregation's weakness the following may be mentioned: "Uncle Jimmie" Robeson, John Lindsey, Benj. Franklin, Joseph Franklin, J. C.
Tully, B. J. Radford, Prof. Kirk, Dr. Allen, E. J. Lampton, J. S. Clements and J. E. Jewett. From the spring of '81 to December '86 the work was suspended, but at the latter date E. J. Lampton came to reorganize and hold a protracted
